Branson Celebrates American Independence
Branson is red, white and blue every day, but our nation's Independence Day takes on special importance, and several of the region's longest-running patriotic celebrations can be found here.
The Branson/Lakes Area has a number of events beginning on Sunday, June 28, with the 20th Annual Honor America Celebration at College of the Ozarks. Branson's celebration continues Friday, July 3. Chateau on the Lake's weekend activities begin at 9 a.m. Friday and continue all weekend with crafts for the whole family, outdoor games, barbeque and more.
Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Branson Landing Fountains, the celebration continues with a free concert from Chain Reaction - A Tribute to Journey, followed by the 2nd Annual Liberty Light Up Fireworks Show.
On Saturday, July 4, from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., the Branson Veterans Task Force is sponsoring Spirit of 76, an Independence Day celebration with free flags and ice cream at Branson Landing and at Stocksill Park. And at Rockaway Beach, free family activities are planned beginning at 1 p.m.

Rhythm and dance artistry stomps to the stage as Silver Dollar City presents the Swedish Supergroup JEERK in their first U.S. performance, all part of the theme park’s summer-long festival, KidsFest, June 6 – August 9. The park’s biggest show year ever features kid-favorite entertainment productions including the Magic of Peter Gossamer and an original live stage show from VeggieTales, plus Kid Concoctions and roller coasters soaring through the trees.
A phenomenon in Europe, JEERK is five spectacular performers who use their percussion skills, rhythmic body movements and an array of novelty props to drum, dance and crash their way through this one-of-a-kind stage show. “Kids love action, and JEERK presents an energetic and outrageous combination of dance, percussion, music and acrobatics, all in flawless precision,” said Brad Schroeder, Silver Dollar City’s Director of Special Events.
Additional featured shows include The Magic of Peter Gossamer with tricks, levitations, vanishings and comedy from the master illusionist, and an original VeggieTales live stage show, “The Invention of Silliness,” starring America’s favorite talking vegetables in a musical adventure created exclusively for Silver Dollar City. Hands-on activity is the focus at the Kid Concoctions Activity Center, where kids can make their own creations from the acclaimed Kid Concoctions books and television show.
Thirty themed rides and attractions offer thrills and adventure, with high-speed coasters such as the explosive-launch coaster PowderKeg, named the Best Family Thrill Coaster on the Planet by Thrillride.com; the multi-looping coaster WildFire, the 7-story super-swooping Giant Swing, and mega-splashing rides like the American Plunge and the Lost River raft ride.
For real ride fans, the park presents Moonlight Madness featuring nighttime fun July 27 – August 9, with rides running until 10 p.m. for summer night thrills.

Bambi, Princess of Magic, premiered her new show June 8th, with a reception and award ceremony receiving the title as International Female Magician of the Decade.
To have both a prince and a princess among its vast constellation of entertainment stars, Branson is without question regally charmed. Look only to the House of VanBurch to find such a royal line holding the keys to the kingdom of magic. And now, adding to the array of offerings of shows designed to defy the senses is “Bambi: The Princess of Magic” presented at the Music City Centre most afternoons.
Bambi VanBurch is the dancer and magician’s assistant-turned-producer and co-starring illusionist to master magician and headlining husband Kirby VanBurch. “Having my own show now, people wonder if we’re still together!” Bambi says, quickly affirming a marriage that began with love at first sight and flourishes today as it did from the beginning. “Only now I’m doing double duty with my own show as well as the Kirby/Bambi show.”
Indeed, “Princess” Bambi, three time named International Magician of the Year for 2007, 2008, and 2009, and was recently recognized as one of the region’s ten most beautiful women in 417 Magazine, summons never-seen-before illusions to leave her subjects spellbound and wondering, “How did she do that?”
“That’s the question I get asked the most,” Bambi says. “‘Tell me how it’s done,’ they always say to me. And it’s true, people want to be tricked; they want to know that it’s real!”
And like the disbelief the audience finds itself suspending, Bambi levitates during the performance, even descending weightlessly on balloons at the very beginning of the show. Her face appears as big as the stage itself, replacing the sight of the gold lead cherubim on the act curtain and readying her audience for the fantasy ride that will fill their senses for the following two hours. Floating in clouds, and sharing her magical dreams, the princess descends on a dime, her feet materializing on terra firma, also known as the Music City Centre stage. And the show has just begun.
Used to the massive illusions that she and her husband employ at the Kirby VanBurch Theater, Bambi’s eye for production and proportion envisioned a different style of magic for the more intimate Music City Centre venue. “I’m petite, so I wanted a show that a closer-up audience could feel more a part of.” This down-sized setting, she says, is particularly well suited for Branson’s summer crowds which are usually rich in children. But nothing is lost in terms of a big show feeling, or one that is uniquely designed by Bambi herself. A lover of animals, Bambi parades ducks and chickens onto the stage as part of her act, and one lucky duck gets shot from a cannon. Unharmed, of course, she hastens to point out.
Bambi’s menagerie is also replete with other beasts including a mind-reading kangaroo. Say no more. The joey will figure it out.
The show also features an illusion better seen than read about, where a young lady has her head pushed down into her body and her arms pulled out. Unharmed, of course, Bambi again hastens to point out. And then there’s Tinkerbell, the fairy from Cathy Rigby’s Peter Pan run at The Mansion, who flits over to the Music City Center to help Bambi levitate.
Smoke and mirrors? “Sure,” she says, “it’s all part of a great show.” But then again, it’s magic — the stuff that Bambi VanBurch says makes grown-ups feel like kids again, and kids feel like — “like all of their dreams can come true.” Maybe even the dream of some day becoming a prince or a princess.
