The Track Family Fun Parks Presents Heavy Metal High Rise

After 30 years of providing family entertainment to local residents and area visitors, The Track Family Fun Parks is celebrating with a reinvestment of almost $3 million in its facilities over the next two years. Construction is well underway in a two-facility capital upgrade, some of which will be completed in the spring of 2011.

Track 4 (3345 W. 76 Country Blvd.) will feature Heavy Metal High Rise, while Track 3 (2505 W. 76 Country Blvd.) will introduce a new classic go-kart track, an expanded building and other exciting family-themed elements. Guests will still be able to experience all the fun with no gate admission charge.

“We could not be more thrilled to be reinvesting in our parks,” said Larry Schmitt, President/Co-Owner of The Track Family Fun Parks. “We have not built a new major attraction at our facilities since 2002. Not only will these capital projects have a positive impact on our business, but we also feel like this reinvestment on 76 Country Boulevard will be a benefit for the entire community. This is an exciting time to offer something new in Branson,” Schmitt added.

Heavy Metal High Rise at Track 4 will be the latest addition to The Track’s high-rise family. The LumberJack at Track 5 and Wild Woody at Track 3 were built in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The new track’s state of the art steel and concrete construction will be more weather-friendly and will offer a completely different experience than its wooden counterparts. Heavy Metal High Rise will be 1,200 linear feet long, and it will contain over 200 tons of steel and 700 cubic yards of concrete. After spiraling up four stories, riders will zoom down a three-tiered slope back to the ground.

The Track 3's new classic track will be unlike any other at The Track facilities. It will be much more of a road course style with tighter and higher banked curves. There will be more turns, as well as more elevation changes throughout the riding experience. The capacity will also be much greater than the current classic track at that location, having a total of 20 single-rider and 10 double-rider go-karts.

At www.bransontracks.com, follow the progress of the construction on The Track’s new network of live interactive webcams. You can also view the construction pictures and keep up to date on facebook or on The Track’s website blog.

Baldknobbers Donate Artifacts to Smithsonian

On Jan. 27, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History received a collection of objects from the Baldknobbers, a variety show based in Branson. The donation documents the long and rich history of this variety jamboree show and its place in American entertainment culture.

The group was formed in 1959 when brothers Bill, Jim, Lyle and Bob Mabe began entertaining visitors on the Taneycomo lakefront with “The Baldknobbers Jamboree.” The Baldknobbers were named after an Ozarks vigilante group from the 1880s and are considered Branson’s first country music-and-comedy show.

The Mabe brothers performed with folklore instruments: washtub bass, banjo, Dobro guitar, washboard and a mule’s jawbone to provide rhythm. The performances were an instant hit with visiting tourists and local fishermen. The band became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved into an old skating rink, converting it into Branson’s first live-entertainment theater. The group continued to expand and today The Baldknobbers Jamboree Theatre seats 1,500 people in the heart of Branson’s entertainment district.

“This donation tells an interesting story about a homegrown genre in American entertainment,” said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. “The collection expands on the museum’s country-music holdings.”

The donation includes Jim “Droopy Drawers” Mabe’s stage costume, hat, washboard and glove; Lyle “George Aggernite” Mabe’s costume and washtub bass; Bill Mabe’s red-and-gold fringe stage shirt and boots; plus brochures, souvenir books and pamphlets. Ed Snowden donated a Dobro guitar on behalf of the late Dennis Mabe (Bill Mabe’s son).

Although three founding Mabe brothers are now deceased, the Baldknobbers continue to be a family affair and the group has grown to include 16 musicians, vocalists and comedians.

The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. The museum shines new light on American history after having been dramatically transformed by a two-year renovation. To learn more about the museum, visit http://americanhistory.si.edu.

Winter Trout Fishing - One of Branson's Best Kept Secrets

Lake Taneycomo, which runs through the heart of Branson, is one of the best trout fisheries in the Midwest. Winter is often the best season for trout fishing on Taneycomo. During late fall Table Rock Lake, which feeds Taneycomo, turns over, inverting the waters. This, in turn, causes the water flowing into Taneycomo to hold more oxygen for trout.

On Feb. 26, fishermen will take off at 8 a.m. from Lilleys' Landing to try their luck and skill for cash prizes and trophies in a public tournaments.  The entry fee is $50 per each two-man team.  Both tournaments are catch-and-release and anglers can only use artificial baits. All entrants and spectators are invited to a free meal immediately following the weigh-in at 4 p.m.

In the 30-plus years of annual winter tournaments on Lake Taneycomo, anglers have learned to prepare for a wide range of weather.  Some years, the high temperature has reached 70; others have dipped to below freezing with snow and sleet.  But the weather is all part of the outdoor adventure, contestants say, as they just add layers and pack hand and feet warmers. "The weather doesn't matter," said Bob Dwiggins of St. Louis, who plans to spend about five weekends fishing at Lilleys' Landing this winter.  "It's always fun here."

Marabou jigs have long proved to be a mainstay on the lake, because they are cheap at $1 each, and can last through a dozen or more fish. Scuds and midges are also great to try in the upper lake, sometimes with a tandem rig tied with an egg fly or a San Juan worm 18 inches below the scud.

Phil Lilley of Lilleys' Landing, said, "We see midge hatches almost every day in the winter here on the lake, and that means our rainbows are ready and waiting to munch on little flies swimming up from the bottom and hatching on the surface."

For current fishing tips, anglers can go to Lilleys' sister website, www.Ozarkanglers.com to find articles, ask questions in a forum and read reports.
